In coastal zones, the existing fauna is mostly hidrophilous, associated to mangrove-tree communities, lagoons, and littoral marshlands. Among the terrestrial reptiles, we can find the jubo de estera (Natrix sipedon compressicauda), that is dispersed in a large area along the coastal region.
Among other species one can find rodent mammals like the jutía carabalí (Capromys prehensilis) and the jutía conga (Capromys pilorides). The latter is the biggest and the most known of the two. It is easy to domesticate, adapts to captive conditions, and reproduces without difficulty.
