Along the whole region agricultural crops predominate. There are pasture lands and secondary vegetation spots and some zones of natural grasslands with secondary vegetation too. Wild vegetation is quite affected by the above-mentioned crops and only the seminatural vegetation associated to river beds is worth mentioning. Cienfuegos Botanical Garden, second in importance in the country, is located near the city of Cienfuegos. It was inaugurated in 1901 through collaboration with Harvard University.
