It is precisely on the coast of Holguin that, at the end of October 1492, the Admiral Christopher Columbus disembarked and said these now famous words: "this land is the most beautiful land that human eyes have ever seen". Six centuries later, the rich and polychrome vegetation of its forests, beaches and fauna is still maintained and is as beautiful as it was when the conqueror discovered this land.

The cays located at the northeast of Holguin are the seats of many aboriginal settlements.

On July 17, 1983 was inaugurated in Cayo Saetia, the Isla de Los Niños (the island of children) one of the youngest sites of the Cuban geography. Since then, the marine and vegetation environment opened as a space of singular attractions for children who not only enjoy the unique landscape but also the new means and facilities for learning and recreation.
