As well as the swamps, prevail the forests on calcareous and wrongly drained parts. There are generally big inundable extensions, where the swamp plants grow, formed by cortadera, palmanaca, arraiján, yana and guano, among others. As a whole, the vegetation of Zapata Swamp constitutes one of the most important green areas in Cuba and because of the variety of the species, within the flora and the fauna; it represents a place of world interest. It possesses natural savannas of high aesthetic value, such as La Laguna del Tesoro and the mouth of the River Hatiguanico, main fluvial artery of the area, as well as Playa Larga and Playa Girón, places of high historical importance. |
